The Unkillable Show: Futurama’s Persistent Resurrections

How Many Times Was Futurama Cancelled?

Futurama is a show that has defied death on multiple occasions. From its initial cancellation by Fox to the revival on Hulu, it has seen its share of ups and downs.

The animated sci-fi series centered on a pizza delivery guy named Fry, his surly robot Bender, and their hapless Planet Express delivery crew. Its devoted fan base helped it survive several cancellation attempts.

The first time

Futurama is often referred to as the show that never dies. Unlike Roseanne or The Simpsons, it’s survived multiple cancellations and revivals. The animated sci-fi series started on Fox in 1999 and aired four seasons before being canceled. It then found new life in reruns on Adult Swim and later Comedy Central.

It was during this period that the show really started to thrive. Episodes were becoming more rooted in on-the-nose topical parody. From an addictive eyePhone app to robosexual marriage laws, the show covered a lot of ground.

It was during this time that the first true Futurama finale aired. The episode was called The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings, and it featured Fry desperately trying to prove his love for Leela. He makes a deal with the robot devil to swap hands, but, as anyone who’s ever made a demonic pact knows, things don’t always go well. Luckily, the episode did offer a satisfying conclusion for the series.

The second time

After the show was canceled, fans launched a letter-writing campaign to get the show back on the air. The show ended up returning to the air in 2007 as four direct-to-DVD movies. However, it was cancelled once again in 2013.

In an attempt to keep the show alive, the producers created the Futurama comics, which are set in the same fictional universe as the television series. The comics have a different running order and are not considered canonical.

Futurama is back with a 20-episode revival series on Hulu. The show continues the story of Fry and Leela on their wacky adventures in the 31st century. The animated sci-fi comedy has been canceled multiple times, but it always seems to find a new home. The show’s cancellations are a reminder that television networks make decisions based on money, not quality. However, it is clear that Futurama has millions of dedicated fans. And they don’t give up easily.

The third time

Futurama, which centers on a slacker who lives 1,000 years in the future, has never seemed to run out of time. It’s no surprise, then, that the animated sci-fi comedy has been resurrected three times. It was first canceled in 2003 after four production seasons, but it came back for a four-episode direct-to-DVD movies series in 2008.

That revival lasted for two more seasons before FOX again decided to cancel the show. This time, it was for good.

The cancellation was met with much outrage by fans who launched a letter-writing campaign to save the show. Eventually, the show was revived again by Comedy Central for another two seasons that aired from 2010 to 2013.

The fourth time

If you’re a fan of Futurama, chances are good that you’ve seen the show through more than one cancellation. In fact, it’s rare for a series to be revived so many times. But that’s not stopping the show from returning for a fifth season on Hulu.

During its run on Fox, Futurama was frequently slated for cancellation due to shifting timeslots and inconsistent ratings. But the show kept going, with creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen relying on DVD sales to demonstrate that there was a large audience for the series.

The show was eventually canceled again in 2013 after five seasons, but it returned for four direct-to-DVD movies and two additional seasons on Comedy Central. And now, 10 years after its last cancellation, it’s back on the air thanks to Hulu. The latest episodes picked up right where the previous ones left off. Hopefully the show can keep up this trend and last all the way to the 31st century!

Risks and Controversies of Vitamin D Supplementation

Health Benefits of Vitamin D

Hardly a month goes by without a new study suggesting that low levels of vitamin D increase the risk of cancer, heart disease or depression. Mainstream doctors and wellness gurus have endorsed the message, and vitamin D supplements sales have skyrocketed.

But only rigorous studies that randomly assign some people to take vitamins and others to do nothing can tell whether the supplements really help.

Why Are So Many People Popping Vitamin D?

The vitamin D frenzy began not in natural food stores but in medical journals. Beginning in 2000, research papers linked low blood levels of the vitamin, now considered normal, to multiple sclerosis, depression and cancer risk.

Researchers also found that people with moderate deficiency, less than 20 ng/mL, performed worse on a series of mental tests and had more than twice the risk of developing Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.

Many doctors jumped on the bandwagon, screening healthy adults for vitamin D deficiency and prescribing supplements. In fact, more than 10 million tests for vitamin D and millions of vitamin D pills are sold annually in the US. But new studies show that these pills don’t prevent serious health problems in most people. The latest, published at the end of last month in The New England Journal of Medicine, adds to earlier trials that showed no benefit from supplementation in healthy post-menopausal women. The findings “overturn dogma and cast doubt on the value of routine screening for vitamin D deficiency and blanket recommendations for supplementation,” the authors write.

The Craze

Since 1924, when it was discovered that sunlight cures rickets, vitamin D has been something of a health fad. It’s a fat-soluble nutrient that helps absorb calcium and phosphorus to make bones strong. It’s naturally produced in the skin from ultraviolet rays and is also found in oily fish, fortified milk and some foods.

But more recent research has linked lower-than-normal blood levels of vitamin D to a host of disorders, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, depression, heart disease and weight gain. In response, doctors have urged patients to get more D through testing and supplements.

One of the leaders in the D craze is Dr. Michael Holick, an endocrinologist at Boston University. He has written book-length odes to vitamin D, and he has a following among the wellness-industrial complex: Gwyneth Paltrow’s website cites his work, and both Mehmet Oz and Oprah Winfrey have promoted his views. But an investigation by Kaiser Health News found that he has received large sums from vitamin D-related industries, including the makers of prescription drugs and indoor tanning equipment, to promote practices that may financially benefit them.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Getting enough vitamin D can help prevent rickets (softening of the bones in childhood) and osteomalacia (softening of the bones in adults). The vitamin is made by the skin when exposed to sunlight, occurs naturally in some foods — including fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines, and fortified dairy and grain products.

The most common cause of vitamin D deficiency is not getting enough sunshine, although certain disorders also can lead to it. In extreme cases, people with low vitamin D levels experience muscle and bone weakness, a condition called rickets in infants and osteomalacia in adults.

A blood test, known as 25(OH)D, can measure vitamin D levels. A level below 30 nmol/L or 20 ng/mL is considered low and may negatively affect bone health. Kidney and liver disease can interfere with the body’s ability to turn sunlight and food into the biologically active form of vitamin D. Inflammatory bowel disease, particularly ulcerative colitis, can also lower levels of the vitamin, according to a 2013 study in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Supplements

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble hormones and prohormones (substances that have little hormonal activity by themselves but the body can turn into hormones) that helps calcium and phosphorus work together to build strong bones. It also plays other important roles in the body, including reducing inflammation and influencing immune and neuromuscular function and glucose metabolism.

People can get vitamin D from sun exposure, foods fortified with the vitamin and supplements. The form that is made in the skin is called vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, and it is also found in fortified foods, fatty fish like salmon and tuna, liver, egg yolks and plants and fungi.

Although excess vitamin D toxicity can occur, it’s not likely from eating a healthy diet or taking supplemental amounts of the vitamin. It most commonly occurs from over-consumption and prescription errors. Vitamin D toxicity can cause high blood calcium levels, which can be harmful to the kidneys, lungs and heart.

The New York Times Yesterday

The Times’s new weekly podcast, “The New York Times Yesterday,” will be the first of its kind. It will explore interesting topics from a wide range of genres.

A Mayo Clinic psychiatrist presents his research to a board that looks different from most hospital boards. The members are children.

The New York Times Replica Edition

The New York Times Replica Edition is an e-paper app that seems designed to appeal to people who like many of the benefits offered by digital but miss having a definitive daily newspaper in their hands. It offers a view of the full scope of today’s paper and brings back true sections that are lost on the web or traditional mobile apps.

Subscribers can access the e-paper by signing in to their home delivery account on the website or with an iPad or iPhone using the PressReader app. A Replica Edition username and password are required for this. The New York Times also provides a free TimesMachine app that lets users read articles from the archive since 1851.

The New York Times Magazine

The New York Times Magazine was launched in 1896 as part of a major overhaul of the newspaper instigated by Adolph Ochs. He banned fiction, comic strips and gossip columns, established a Sunday supplement, and introduced the first photographs to the newspaper.

The Company operates newspapers, magazines and websites; produces television and radio programs; provides information services; and manufactures and distributes products related to education, health care and sports. The Company’s principal properties include The New York Times and other print and digital media assets.

The Times gives its reporters the time and resources to dig into a single story for months at a time. This allows them to challenge conventional wisdom and change lives.

The New York Times Book Review

The Book Review is a major source of literary excitement, and its staffers are eager to read what they are assigned. They also genuinely love books and are doing exactly what they want to be doing.

However, the constriction of coverage is obvious. For example, why doesn’t the Times get an honest poet to evaluate a poetry book (rather than a jaded, score-settling sycophant)?

In addition, the review has a tendency to promote famous writers, leading to eye-rolling pairings like Rob Lowe on a biography of Ulysses S. Grant. The Times can be a force for good, but it must do so by embracing a more democratic approach to reviewing.

The New York Times Arts & Leisure

Edited from Paris, London and Hong Kong, The New York Times International provides readers with a continuous flow of geopolitical, business, sports and cultural news. The editorial team also covers food, fashion, hotels, travel and cruises from a distinctly global perspective. Andrew (last name pronounced Luh-vallee) LaVallee leads the arts and leisure coverage, which includes TV, film, music and books. He is a former Wall Street Journal reporter and editor, who worked in New York and Hong Kong. He studied English, ethnic studies and clarinet performance at Oberlin College and journalism at Columbia University. He is a native of Maine.

The New York Times Sports

The New York Times has dismantled its sports department and will rely on The Athletic to provide most of its daily coverage of teams and games. The move is part of a larger effort to integrate The Athletic into the Times newsroom and make it available in a subscription bundle with the main newspaper.

The decision has prompted anger from some staff members. The union representing them complained that the masthead had kept them in the dark, and argued that the purchase of The Athletic is really an attempt to get rid of the paper’s own sports section. Many of the journalists who worked on the desk have been reassigned to other departments.

The New York Times Business

The New York Times Business is a news and analysis magazine covering the world of business. It contains articles, podcasts, video, and interactive features. It also includes the newspaper’s financial columnists, market analysis, and opinion pieces. It is available online, in print, and via mobile apps. The Times’s distribution strategy focuses on accessibility, digital expansion, and quality journalism.

The New York Times Company has a number of revenue streams, including subscription fees and advertising. In 2022, almost 67% of the company’s revenue came from subscriptions (both printed and digital). Advertising revenues are derived from display ads, classified advertisements, and other formats. In addition, the company earns revenue from events and conferences, digital archive licensing, and building rental income.

I see a lot of books that claim to be “#1 New York Times bestseller.” But what does it mean?

The Dragon Riders by Violet Sorrengail

She fears Xaden Riorson will kill her as he was part of the military leadership that executed her father for leading an uprising. Despite that, he and her dragons Sgaeyl and Tairn bond with Violet.

The Gigi Graham Series by Gigi Graham

Virginia “Gigi” Graham Tchividjian is the oldest daughter of Billy and Ruth Graham and a popular inspirational speaker who has traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She is the author of numerous books, including Currents of the Heart, Passing It On and A Quiet Knowing. Gigi is the mother of seven children, including pastor Stephan Tchividjian, attorney Basyle “Boz” Tchividjian and counselor Jerusha Duford.

The Maple Hills Series by Gigi Graham

Egyptologist Amelia Peabody takes to the Nile with unshakable self-confidence and her intrepid Emerson brothers in this “sparkling series.” This series combines Peters’ love of history, humor, Edwardian England, and Egypt. Barbara Mertz, who wrote the books under the pen name Elizabeth Peters, also wrote nonfiction and contributed to public radio.

The Book of Unrequited Love by Liane Moriarty

Aussie author Liane Moriarty has written nine novels, including the New York Times best sellers Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers. Both of these have been adapted into television series for HBO and Hulu, respectively.

This book is a cocktail of friendship and modern love spiked with a touch of deceit. A must-read for fans of Big Little Lies and those interested in exploring the darker side of suburbia.

The Story of a Girl by Emma Donoghue

With books like Room (now a film starring Brie Larson), Haven, and The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue is masterful at taking real-life snippets and making them feel deeply authentic. She is also a master at conjuring up claustrophobic spaces and making them feel fully alive.

In this story, two fourteen-year-old girls meet at a private school. They forge a powerful connection that will affect both of their lives.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Audrey Niffenegger didn’t think her 2003 novel would make much of a splash, believing it might become a “small cult novel for librarians.” Instead, The Time Traveler’s Wife became a national bestseller and inspired the 2009 film adaptation starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.

The premise of this book is pretty perplexing at first glance. It’s about a man who has a genetic disorder that causes him to randomly time-travel and not know who his wife is.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games tells the story of a dystopian future where children are forced to fight each other until they die. Although it is classified as a young adult novel, the book has been read by people from all ages.

Suzanne Collins was raised in a military family and her father served in the Air Force and fought in Vietnam. She was inspired by these experiences when she wrote the book.

The Percy Jackson & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan

The Percy Jackson series is a great adventure series that incorporates Greek mythology. The main character is Percy who, along with his best friend Annabeth and Grover, goes on adventures and meets gods.

The books are written in Percy’s sarcastic voice and it is easy to get immersed in the world of Greek mythology. The characters are also very well developed.
